Since PrestaShop 1.6, there haven’t been major changes in functionality — and in some cases, stock management is even less convenient.

In practice, when optimized properly, there’s hardly any speed difference between versions 1.6, 1.7, and 8.

Not really — the functionality is nearly the same across versions.

So, why upgrade to the latest version of PrestaShop?
In our opinion, there are three main reasons:

• Security updates
• Module compatibility with current PrestaShop changes
• Support for modern server technologies

If you choose to upgrade, keep this in mind:

• If you’re upgrading from PrestaShop 1.6 to version 8, your current theme and custom modules will not be compatible with the new frontend.
• Due to changes in the admin panel’s controller structure, your modules will likely need to be fully rewritten.

Our advice:
Upgrade if you’re using PrestaShop 1.7 — it will be faster and more cost-effective.

If you're still on version 1.6 and have many customizations, the upgrade may cost as much as building a new store from scratch. However, your database structure can be reused, and some features may be migrated.
